UFC 300 is the highly coveted PPV of the Ultimate Fighting Championships which at present is without a headlining fight. UFC CEO Dana White had already announced a plethora of exciting fights for the card. However, he has not as of yet even hinted who will headline the PPV in Las Vegas. Here are the top 7 fights that could potentially headline UFC 300.
7. Leon Edwards vs Belal Muhammad
Leon Edwards fighting Belal Muhammad is not something that can get the fans excited. The chances of it headlining UFC 300 are very low considering Edwards’ reluctance to engage in trash talks and Muhammad’s inability to finish his fights. Nonetheless, the duo have two of the longest active win streaks in the welterweight division of the UFC. Moreover, they also had their first encounter end in a No Contest due to an inadvertent eye poke from Edwards.
6. Alexa Grasso vs Valentina Shevchenko
Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko fought to a split draw at UFC Noche in the rematch of their fight at UFC 285 which Grasso won by submission. Many, including UFC CEO Dana White, felt that Shevchenko was robbed of a rightful victory at UFC Noche. Therefore, White was okay for Grasso and Shevchenko to settle their scores in a trilogy. Like Edwards vs Muhammad, the likelihood of this fight headlining UFC 300 is also very slim.
5. Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler
Only Conor McGregor can headline a PPV without being a champion with title fights in the co-main events. He had already announced his fight with Michael Chandler for the PPV on June 29 which will coincide with the 2023 International Fight Week. However, it needs to be noted that neither the UFC nor Dana White has confirmed the date and venue for a Chandler vs McGregor fight. Nonetheless, this fight has a better chance to headline UFC 300 than the aforementioned women’s flyweight and men’s welterweight title fights.
4. Dricus du Plessis vs Leon Edwards
Eventhough Leon Edwards vs Belal Muhammad has a low chance to headline UFC 300, an Edwards vs du Plessis superfight has a very big chance. Edwards flirted with the idea of fighting for a second belt before and after his victory over Colby Covington at UFC 296. The middleweight champion du Plessis is undefeated in the UFC and has only had exciting fights in the UFC. Moreover, he has a full country behind him in South Africa.
3. Dricus du Plessis vs Israel Adesanya
Dricus du Plessis was supposed to fight for the middleweight title at UFC 293 against Israel Adesanya but could not recover from his foot injury in time. Therefore, Sean Strickland stepped in on short notice to upset Adesanya and sent the Kiwi on a self-imposed hiatus. However, the rivalry between du Plessis and Adesanya with their shared African heritage has upped the fans’ excitement to a core. With Adesanya confirming his return to be sooner rather than later, an Adesnya vs du Plessis fight could potentially headline UFC 300.
2. Alex Pereira vs Israel Adesanya
Alex Pereira is now one of the biggest stars in the UFC and it was pretty much evident during his appearance at UFC 297. Pereira with his wicked left hook became a fan favorite with his cold demeanor inside the octagon. He has attained double champ status in the UFC with single-digit fights. His rivalry with Israel Adesanya has been one of the biggest rivalries in combat sports history. Adesanya won their latest bout Pereira leads their overall rivalry 3-1 (1-1 in UFC). Pereira called out Adesany after his light heavyweight title triumph at UFC 295 but Adesanya did not entertain the idea. With the star power of Adesanya and Pereira, the UFC could have a successful headliner between the pair.
1. Alex Pereira vs Magomed Ankalaev
The light heavyweight title fight between Alex Pereira and Magomed Ankalaev has the best chance to headline UFC 300. Ankalaev is on an undefeated streak and Pereira has already hinted his interest in the fight. Jamahal Hill is the rightful contender but he may not be fully recovered from injury by UFC 300. Both are coming off knockout victories over formidable opponents like Jiri Prochazka and Johnny Walker respectively. Pereira is one of the biggest stars in the UFC not named Conor McGregor and his first defense of the light heavyweight title could very likely be the main event of UFC 300.
